The Rock It! project is a 12-month rolling programme of work taking place from May to March. We take on young people aged 11-18 years with a passion for new music, whether beginners or experienced musicians. We also run a comprehensive volunteer programme for ex-participants aged up to 21, allowing them to take lead roles within the project.
Rock It! is comprised of three strands of work:
New participants are placed into groups and provided with professional tutoring in performance, music composition and working together as a band. Participants take part in 3 indoor performances over the year, and are able to take advantage of music training workshops and Arts Awards sessions alongside their rehearsals. Bands perform at our annual outdoor festival in the summer and are provided with a professional recording session at the end of the project.
Volunteers are usually ex-participants who wish to continue learning about music leading and the music industry. We provide them with music industry training workshops and practical experience in music tutoring and peer mentoring. Our volunteers are able to progress to become trainee music leaders and members of the management board.
Arts Awards are open to all new participants and volunteers and we can deliver Bronze and Silver awards in-house. This work includes taking part in training, visiting events, and in-depth exploration of music and the arts. Alongside this, participants and volunteers can get involved in organising our performance events, including our outdoor summer festival. This includes workshops on health and safety, risk awareness, sound engineering and events management, and allows young people to take the lead at our events whether sound engineering, compering or stage management.
