Arts Awards sharing

As part of our project, young people have the opportunity to undertake Bronze and Silver Arts Awards with a qualified in-house advisor. As part of this work, young people compile presentations on their musical hero or heroine, and also write and share event reviews.

As part of this sharing, we are presenting the

work done this year from our participants below. We hope you like it!

Mixing it up: Rock It! and The Halle join forces

As part of our work as BBC Performing Arts Fund Community Music Winners for 2013, Rock It! worked on four recordings with professional musicians from The Manchester Halle orchestra. You can now listen to these original works on our Soundcloud page.

The work took place over in spring 2014 and involved Halle musicians Dave Hext drums, Ken Brown trumpet, Dale Culliford cello, Katherine Small flute, Bea Schwimmer basso; Rock It! musicians: Harry Jones drums, James Holt guitar/vocals/keyboards, Lois Holmes vocals, Isaac Walbrooke guitar, Imogen Connell-Howard bass guitar, Reece Holmes drums, Cameron Jones drums/vocals.

The project was led by Rock It! Music Leaders Daniel Lever and James Holt, and Halle musician Bea Schwimmer.

The results are impressive, involving just 2 full days working with the Halle musicians to finalise and record the tracks live at DOA Studios with producer Ant Booth. Please feel free to let us know what you think via

Soundcloud or by emailing us at rockitbolton@gmail.com.

Breaking stereotypes – A lesson in hip-hop

Here at Rock It! we don’t do artist workshops by half. We don’t just hire an MC, we hire a NY label signed MC. We don’t just hire a scratch DJ, we hire an international award-winning scratch DJ.

The duo of Duke Zero-One and Furious P graced our humble studios to teach our Rockiteers a thing or two about hip hop and rap, and why listening to a variety of music doesn’t make you any less of a musician but makes you more so. It was a tough gig performing to dedicated rock and metal fans, but the ever charismatic Duke and Furious had participants composing and performing raps and scratch freestyle in the blink of an eye, and thinking about how they can bring the tools of hip-hop into their own composition work.

With some participants who had only ever been exposed to the gangs, guns and drugs side of rap music in the charts, Duke and Scratch embarked on a history lesson, offering an alternative view of the origins of rap, hip-hop and scratch music as the voice of the people. To quote Duke,” There are only two types of music, good and bad.”

Our top two participants, Jack Q and Jude , even won a T-shirt and download of the duo’s newest album. You can purchase one of these T-shirts, which come with a free download for the latest release from Duke Zero-One and Furious P, here.

For now, enjoy perusing our lovely photos and if you want to hear their performances in full, visit the workshop playlist on our Youtube feed

A warm welcome from the BBC Performing Arts Fund

Meet the Winners: Rock It! Collective

What do you get when you mix rock experts with rock enthusiasts? We’re glad you asked…

Throwing Vinyl

1. Who are Rock It! Collective?

Rock It! is a youth-led community organisation representing teenagers from Greater Manchester aged between 11 and 21 with a passion for music and the arts. Formed in Bolton in 2009 by young musicians, Rock It! has helped over 100 young people of all levels of ability create new music and pass on their skills to others.

Rock It! also runs a comprehensive volunteering programme, providing Arts Awards accreditations through practical music industry training. We provide positive activities and produce trainee music leaders and peer mentors with the skills, knowledge and confidence to move forward, whether going for employment, training or educational opportunities.

2. How will the BBC Performing Art Fund Community Music grant help the group?

The BBC PAF grant provides our participants with the chance to expand their musical knowledge, exploring other genres through workshops in Hip Hop, Reggae and more. The grant will also fund a collaborative composition with classical musicians, pushing our experienced musicians even further in their development. Check out our updates at www.rockitbolton.com to see how the grant has helped.

3. Tell us about the best day Rock It! Collective has had to date?

The best days for the Rock It! Collective are those which bring everyone together to showcase their achievements and support each other. These have to be the annual Rock It! outdoor festivals which have been held on Queens Park, Bolton for the past 3 years. They are a days of celebration for all our members and their families, past and present, to perform for the community and provide lots of music and arts activities for people of all ages.

Videos of the days can be found herehere and here.

4. What was the best reaction from the group when they found out about winning the
PAF grant?

The enthusiasm was great from those of our musicians who had been begging for a chance to explore new music genres for years and found they would finally have the opportunity!  The line, “when can we get started then?” was one we heard often!

5. Give us 3 words that describe a performance by Rock It! Collective

Wild, original, awesome!

Photo Finish

Installment three of our non-music training endeavours, and we invited band and  live music photographer Nik Bryant in to tell us a bit about the basics of photography. With an impressive portfolio of regional and national bands, Nik was able to tell us all the tips and hazards of photoshoots and trying to catch theperformance atmosphere in in a (badly-lit) gig venue!

Supported by Nik and our own young photographer, Bethan Fielding, participants went out in groups and composed their own band photoshoots. The results from one group are below consisting of Ben, Arthur, David and Kristian, with Christie hiding behind the camera! I think you’ll agree, not bad for a first try…and amusing at that.

Making an impact

You’ve set up your band, written songs, played a few gigs and want to carry on working together after your time in Rock It! So how do you promote your music and band to potential fans, promoters and more?

Rock It! invited Kate Butler (ex-Factory Records, BBC) along to talk to

our young musicians about just this, and give us some tips on effective promotion to take away for the future.

DSC_0056

Delivering to the youngest audience of her training career, Kate broke the subject down into basic common sense principles and had our members creating audience and media mindmaps, press releases and hooks, and thinking about who might like their music.

DSC_0078

Over the course of just 3 short hours, participants ended the workshop by creating full promotional plans to present to potential sponsors

for a UK visit and tour of the Landfill Orchestra from Paraguay. Quite an achievement!

Video killed the radio star

Thanks to Awards For All, Rock It! is embarking on a series of non-music training for our members, providing new skills that will help both them and the project for the future.

Considering this writer’s reputation for filming nearly unusable mobile phone footage of project happenings, it seemed only appropriate to kick this term off with some training on how to film and edit footage properly, even when only basic equipment < is available.

Step up The Box.Tv, a local community film organisation dedicated to getting children and young people trained and experienced in filming, with a youth-led ethos much in line with our own.

Some photos from the day are below, and look out for links to the final videos (filmed and edited in just 3 hours) to be added to our Youtube feed soon.

Erm… what’s happened to Kermit?

Brushing up on acting

So you’ve learned an instrument, rehearsed with your band and maybe even composed an original song – all within 12 weeks. Now you have to get on stage in front of an expectant audience and perform. Performance jitters are not unusual for seasoned musicians, never mind first timers, so at Rock It! we asked local drama expert Katy Weir from our very own local award winning theatre, The Octagon, to come and give us a few tips to help our participants loosen up before the big event.

The results were, well, amusing to say the least. A manic and highly enjoyable day with many smiling faces by the end of the session. Thanks to Katy, The Octagon, and all our participants for jumping in with both feet!

Rock It! does Reggae

Last week, Rock It! welcomed Marcus Hercules and Jonathan from Natural Vibes to give our participants and volunteers a crash course in Reggae music.

DSC_0306

Originally suggested as a workshop by our young musicians, Reggae was seen as a genre which could really fit into our live music-based work and provide an added dimension when composing new music.

The entirely knowledgable Marcus took us through the evolution of Reggae from Calypso and Carnival, touching on its political roots and social and cultural significance. We

Gearing up for a summer of music

Rock It! has re-opened its doors to young music lovers for 2013. With a host of new young volunteers too, refreshed music leaders and trainees, we’re hitting the ground running. There are still some places for musicians left, so if you are aged 11-18, visit our ‘Apply’ page to find out more. It’s a busy term ahead, with workshops on Reggae, Beyond Hip Hop and Theatre 074-679 techniques to complement our Rock School format and get participants exploring other genres.

So who’s going to get the giant ice-cream?

Our volunteers are doubly busy too, having just taken part in Project Management workshop delivered by Tina Redford from Brighter Sound. All this in preparation for our summer festival in partnership with Get Active on 4th August 2013 at Queens Park, Bolton.             Plans so far are exciting, and we have lots of ideas to make the event the best ever this year. Keep a look out for updates via the website as we’ll be keeping you informed of what http://www.exambusiness.com we’re developing regularly. We can also now announce that we are the proud recipients of a Youth Music funding award for 2013-15, to help fund our core project and expand our partnership working across Greater Manchester, as well as diversifying the horizons of what we do for young artists. And our future aspirations? World takeover, here we come…!
