Fifteen young members of Rock It! and music leaders took part in a special training day on hip hop lyricism and spoken word last weekend. Highly experienced artists Tatch (rapper, beatbox) and Keisha (rapper, spoken word), Creative Experts from Contact Theatre Manchester, took us back to basics combining rap, spoken word and poetry to provide new insight into lyric composition.

Activities included a word association battle, creating punchlines for ‘guess the celebrity’, composing short poetry with a twist, recognising wordplay and metaphor, and the mammoth but highly enjoyable task of writing our own individual full raps with chorus! The day also gave us Rock It! bods lots of ideas engaging our participants which we hope to introduce for our next intake later this year (dates to be confirmed).

The training day was part of our work for the BBC Performing Arts Fund to learn about different genres of music.
